New Children's Choir CD Heralds the Holiday Season
HARRISONBURG - The widely-acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir has released a new recording to herald the holiday season.
The compact disc, titled "Christmas Comin'," includes 15 selections, some recorded live at the choir's 2001 Christmas concerts and some done in a recording studio.
The album features the Preparatory (ages 8-11), Treble (ages 10-15) and Concert (ages 11-17) Choirs. Two seasonal numbers, "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," are sung by the combined choirs and audience.
The SVCC, part of the Preparatory Music program at Eastern Mennonite University, was formed in 1992 with 38 members and has expanded to include 192 members in five choirs. Julia J. White is founder and artistic director of SVCC.
Choristers come from the Harrisonburg area and as far away as Edinburg, Shenandoah, Waynesboro, Washington, Va., and Franklin, W. Va.The choristers took part in the Southern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors' Association, earlier this year in Charlotte, N.C. The group rehearsed and performed under Sir David Willcocks, internationally-renowned icon of English choral music.
The SVCC performed and toured in Florence and Rome, Italy, in July, 2001, at the Tuscany International Children’s Chorus Festival.
The choir has performed in concert three times with the renowned American Boychoir of Princeton, N.J.; at Carnegie Hall in New York City, at the White House and at the National Christmas tree lighting ceremony with Placido Domingo in Washington, D.C.
