EMU to Observe Virginia Private Colleges Week

Eastern Mennonite University is among 24 schools in the Old Dominion taking part in the seventh annual Virginia Private Colleges Week, July 28-Aug. 2.

High school students who visit four Virginia private colleges during the designated week will receive application fee waivers redeemable at any three private colleges. With application fees ranging from $15 to $50, students could save as much as $100.

Governor Mark Warner has issued a proclamation recognizing July 28-Aug. 2 as "Private Colleges Week? in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Last year, these colleges welcomed over 2,000 visitors during the week.

"We hope that students and their families will participate and learn about the wonderful opportunities available at Virginia private colleges," said Robert Lambeth, President of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV). "Our colleges are affordable, offering an academic community where teaching comes first and students receive personal attention." A typical class at a Virginia private college includes 18 students.

Campus tours during Private College Week include informational sessions on how to apply for admission and financial aid.

Sessions will be offered at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2. Participants will receive a stamped "passport" at the first college they visit and should have it stamped at each college they visit. Passports with four stamps can be redeemed for three application fee waivers, which can be used at any of the 24 participating CICV member colleges.

CICV was founded in 1971 to promote the interests of nonprofit, independent higher education in Virginia. The Council was also instrumental in starting the state's Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) program. All full-time undergraduate students from Virginia attending a CICV institution in 2003-2004 will be eligible to receive a TAG award from the Commonwealth of Virginia of approximately $2,200 per year.
