Policy for Admission of the English as a Second Language Student (ESL)

EMU’s current policy unconditionally admits students to the academic program if they score 550 (does not include speaking section) on the written Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) OR 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) which include a speaking section. Students with a lower score and a record of academic success are conditionally admitted to the undergraduate program.

Admission to the nursing program includes a review of a number of factors. These factors include a review of the GPA, grades in psychology, college writing, humanities, credit hour load carried each semester, TOEFL score and the motivation and commitment of the student. The Student Affairs committee decides admission for all students to the program and would determine if a specific applicant needs to be made aware at that time that they may require a slower pace in the program to succeed. The applicant will need to agree to the recommendations of the Student Affairs Committee.

The nursing department will make every effort to provide resources that will facilitate student success in the program.
