Sue has worked in the field of adult education beginning in 1977, when she volunteered with the Mennonite Central Committee designing community education projects in Haiti and Kentucky. She has served as a national trainer for Literacy Volunteers of America and a Vista volunteer working in basic adult education in West Virginia. For 10 years she worked for the Virginia State Department of Education as an Adult Education Specialist and director of the Adult Educator’s Research Network.

Sue has worked at EMU since 1996, as the director of the Adult Degree Completion Program, Director of the MA in Organizational Research, Associate Graduate Dean and is currently the Interim Graduate Dean. Her academic interests include literacy and orality, community culture and education, and the role of social justice in higher education.

Sue lives in Harrisonburg with her husband, David. They have two adult daughters, two sons-in-law, and 2 granddaughters. Sue and Dave are members of the Harrisonburg Community Mennonite Church congregation.
