Finances
tuition and fees | other charges | payment plans | assistance
A student's financial need can be met in various ways. This is accomplished through a combination of personal resources, congregational and denominational grants-in-aid, seminary scholarships, the on-campus student employment program and a student loan.
The student's education budget includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses, travel and other miscellaneous expenses. The amount contributed toward the student budget from personal resources depends on information from the financial aid form.
Since many students qualify for financial assistance, an application for financial assistance should be submitted as early as possible. The Financial Assistance Office will assist the student in preparing a budget, and the Student Accounts Office will help the student work out a payment plan.
Tuition and Fees
The regular session is made up of: Fall Semester, Spring Semester, May term and one to two-week classes and institutes in June. Typically students need to take a course in one of the one-month terms each year to complete a program in the normal time period. Tuition and activities fees are charged at a per-credit-hour rate for all students.
Tuition per credit hour for 2008-09 is $432. Contact the Seminary Admissions Office for a schedule of rates.

Books and Supplies
The cost of books and stationery varies with students and with courses but is approximately $600 a year. All purchases in the campus bookstore under $5 are to be paid in cash.Payment Plans
Since the seminary must make financial commitments for an entire year, the student is required to choose a specific payment plan. Failure to meet financial obligations is cause for denying the student the privilege of registering for or attending subsequent classes, receiving a degree or releasing a transcript of credit.
Collection costs or charges along with all attorney fees necessary for the collection of any debt to the University will be charged and paid by the debtor. Delinquent accounts are reported to the Credit Bureau.
The seminary provides several payment plans. Arrangement for payment must be made with the Student Accounts Office one week before the semester begins.
- Semester Plan. This requires payment for each semester one week before the semester begins.
- Other plans. Several alternative financing plans are available from third party
providers. Brochures are available from the Student Accounts
office.
The student’s arrangement for payment should be set up with the Student
Accounts Office as early as possible.
Satisfactory arrangements for settlement of a student’s semester account must
be made before being permitted to register for a subsequent semester. Accounts
for the academic year must be paid before a student will receive a diploma and
before a release of transcripts.
Refunds
Refunds are made only after notice is received from the registrar of the student’s official withdrawal from a course or courses. Withdrawal procedures should be carefully complied with in order to ensure maximum refund credit. Since EMS must make financial commitments for an entire year, only partial refunds can be made if a student withdraws during a semester. The refund schedule is in the Student Handbook/Campus Directory.
Financial assistance to seminary students is available in the following forms:
- Federal Stafford Loans & Federal Work-Study are federally funded programs and require an additional need analysis document. EMU uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as the need analysis document. This form is sent to all students who apply for admission. Some interest-free Stafford loans are available. Contact the director of financial assistance for details. Students with demonstrated financial need (documented on the FAFSA) are informed of employment and loan eligibility amounts by way of a financial assistance award letter.
- Mennonite Student Grants are available to full-time students who are members of the Mennonite Church. Applicants are identified through information on the admission application. ($750 per semester for 9 or more credit hours)
- Matching Grants require the home congregation to provide a “statement of commitment of funds” by March 1 of each year. (up to $1000 per year)
- Ministry Leadership Awards are offered to five new M.Div. students contingent on availability of funds. The MLA is a grant for one-half to two-thirds tuition. EMS will invite qualified persons from the current pool of new applicants to apply.
- Mission Internship Grants are available through the John Coffman Center. The Samuel Grant provides full tuition for study up to two years of seminary studies. More information may be received by contacting the center directly.
- International Students- EMU and a sponsoring mission agency will select two international students each year to receive grant funds for attendance at EMS. The student must return to his/her home country following the period of study.
