In our postmodern world the Christian church no longer resides at the center of society. Some voices protest this marginalization. Others call for a recovery of the early church's missional identity and purpose. In this vein, two Mennonite groups recently formed Mennonite Church USA around a common identity as "a missional church."

A new vision for a "missional church" sparks fresh discussions about what kind of church leadership is needed today. What does leadership look like in a missional church? What is the place and role of leadership today? How do pastors and church leaders faithfully lead God’s people in this strange new world?

Step back from leading to ponder these questions with other pastors and church leaders for a few days. It will be a great opportunity to dialogue and discern together with leaders from numerous denominations about the role of leadership in a missional church. Our primary resource person, Alan Roxburgh, comes highly recommended by last year's SLT resource, Brian McLaren.

Alan Roxburgh is president of the Missional Leadership Institute and part of a team planting a missional church in Vancouver, B.C. He leads conferences and seminars on leadership for missional transformation with denominations and congregations across North America, Europe and Australia. He serves as a leader in the Gospel and Culture Network and participates in Emergent, a network fostering missional engagement with postmodern generations. He is an ordained Baptist minister with more than 25 years of experience in pastoral and denominational leadership and seminary education. Alan has written several books: Reaching a New Generation; The Missionary Congregation, Leadership and Liminality; Crossing the Bridge: Leadership in a Time of Change; and has two more forthcoming. He enjoys mountain biking, running and hanging out at the "Bean," a local coffee shop.
