Instructor Doris Martin: "Aikido provides an aerobic workout as it stretches and tones the body and supports a mind-body connection. The practice of Aikido also provides a rich metaphor for how to live in relationship to others and the environment. Growing up in a Mennonite family and community, I was taught that violence against others is contrary to the teachings of Jesus as well as to those of many other great teachers, Buddha, Ghandi, etc. Aikido principles of do no harm, of moving from one's center, staying relaxed and focused in the midst of conflict, understanding your 'opponent' and extending 'ki' or 'energy' are valuable lessons for any context. Having practiced since 1983, and having taught since 1996, I am committed to sharing the art of Aikido with others."
