EMU: Uniquely Welcoming

EMU warmly welcomes international students like few other universities. From the moment students land in the United States, through the transition to life on campus, EMU provides support every step of the way.

More than 70 percent of EMU faculty and staff have lived and worked internationally. So we understand what it is like to adjust to a new culture, climate and environment! We help international students adjust. Some things start even before the student arrives on campus!

When You Arrive

The nearest international airports to EMU are more than two hours away in Washington, D.C., and there is no public transportation between EMU and these airports. Therefore, EMU’s International Student Services staff meets incoming international students at the airport and takes them to campus.

We do this any time of day, any day of the week. We provide the same service when it’s time for students to return home, helping with final packing and transport to the airport.

Where You Will Live

EMU also arranges housing before the international student arrives on campus. A coordinator connects with new students via e-mail before they arrive to find out what kind of lodging and roommate they prefer.

By the time a new international student arrives at EMU, he or she will:

How You Will Adjust

Each fall the program offers a two and a half day orientation for international students. Events include meals together in the EMU dining hall, an ice cream social and meal out at a local restaurant. Participants go on an excursion to local attractions, discuss details such as health insurance, social security cards, and banking, and get an introduction to EMU student services, such as the fitness center, career center, and health and counseling services.

EMU’s international student coordinator also plans activities for the international student group to enjoy together throughout the year. These include:

International Student Organization . Events . Immigration Regulations . Resources . Orientation . Contacts
