Teaching of English, Spanish and Second Languages

Teacher education majors must comply with all teacher education requirements, which are listed in the course catalog for education and on the education website. Our teacher education program has carried the highest national accreditation standards in the nation for more than 30 years. EMU is one of only five private colleges in Virginia to be NCATE-certified. NCATE accreditation means your teaching license for grades 6-12 will be accepted in most of the U.S.

The minor in TESOL provides the opportunity to study the unique aspects of teaching English to speakers of other languages with practical experience in the classroom. See page 123 in the course catalog for additional information.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Minor with Teaching Endorsement for PreK-12

To teach in U.S. public schools, a student must combine an academic major with the minor in TESOL and an education licensure program. A teaching endorsement in ESL (Grades PreK-12) is approved by the Virginia Department of Education.

The two methods courses (LING 450 Methods of Language Teaching and LING 460 Practicum in TESOL) require admission to teacher education, and co-enrollment in LING 450 and ED 351 General Curriculum and Methods. Teacher candidates must comply with all teacher education requirements.
