In January 2018, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that, in the setting of a mumps outbreak, individuals who have been previously vaccinated with two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine receive a third dose. It is suggested a third MMR dose be given to individuals in an outbreak who completed their two-dose series more than two years before the onset of the outbreak. 

If you have chosen not to receive any MMR vaccine, you may be required to leave campus should an outbreak occur at EMU. 

What can you do & what do you need to know

•  Avoid contact with persons who have been exposed to persons diagnosed with Mumps (ie: JMU athletic team members)
• Mumps usually appears 2 weeks after exposure to the virus. Symptoms include: fatigue, body aches, headache, loss of appetite, low grade fever, swelling of salivary glands, pain with chewing or swallowing. Know that the glands may not swell at once -more commonly they swell and become painful periodically.
• You are most likely to pass the mumps virus to another person from the time you come in contact with the virus to when your salivary (Parotid) glands swell.
• Call EMU Health Services Nurse Call Line with questions/concerns: 432-4302
• Make an appointment in Health Services to receive an MMR vaccine if you desire to. (Based on the recommended immunization schedule, second dose of MMR is given between ages 5 and 6.)
• Stay well; stay hydrated; get lots of rest; avoid persons who are ill; if you are ill isolate yourself to avoid spreading the illness.
