South Africa: Summer 2019

Program Description

Learn the history of South Africa, its legacy of colonialism and apartheid, and how South Africans are trying to overcome this painful history. 

We will focus on the social constructs created around race, and particularly on the church’s role in the struggle against apartheid and the pursuit of peace, justice, and reconciliation.

EXPAND YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF:

  • The way in which apartheid constructed a race-based society and the oppression and injustice left in its wake. 
  • The role of the church in the ongoing struggle for peace, justice and reconciliation. Engage South Africans exploring how to build just relationships.
  • Encounter narratives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and explore its strengths and weaknesses.
