“My time at EMU was filled with many opportunities to develop as a musician and as a leader. I especially appreciate the chance to teach private lessons and groups in the preparatory program, as well as other leadership opportunities in conducting classes and small string ensembles.

I enjoyed performing, solo and in groups, from orchestra to smaller chamber groups and even being part of other music student’s projects! EMU was a wonderful experience!"

Currently Kara teaches strings and general music at Northwood Academy Charter School in Philadelphia, Pa.

“Music at EMU has taught me the importance of connecting with others. To me, this is one of the most valuable things to be learned in life. We’re not on this journey alone, but we must find concrete ways in which to react to others. Music, as they say, is the universal language.

I have grown so much as a violinist by spending these last four years with Joan Griffing. My horizons have been broadened by being able to play in several different settings, including in a pit orchestra for a musical, a string quartet at a local jail, as soloist with the EMU Chamber Orchestra, and many other opportunities. My abilities on the violin have increased immensely during my time here due to both the excellent teaching and the wonderful atmosphere that is provided at EMU.

By being in a place which both worships God and cherishes music, I am reminded daily—simply by the example of others—that our musical talents are meant to be used as instruments of God’s glory. Playing music for God—and only God—is the most powerful type of prayer I have experienced yet, and EMU has been a place where I can live that prayer every day.

I’ve always enjoyed playing the violin and making music, but my time at EMU has solidified the fact that music will always be a central part of my life. My goal has always been to be joyful and to share that joy with others, and now music has given me a means to accomplish that goal."
