John Horst (Deceased)

POSITION: Faculty Emeritus/Physics

DEPARTMENT: Emeriti

Read a tribute.

As a professor in mathematics and physics, Horst spent much of his time explaining variables, constants and equations. He knew that many areas of physics, especially acoustics, were more than just mathematical description. While Horst could explain sound waves with a physicist's vocabulary, he is also a fluent musician. In fact, his wide variety of interests made him a good addition to team-taught interdisciplinary courses at EMU. Two of his extra-curricular activities over the years were coaching award-winning teams for international math modeling competitions and directing the EMU Planetarium that attracted thousands of school children.

Horst was a singer in music groups and a composer of published music. One of his retirement projects was producing a series of CDs from the musical archives of The Mennonite Hour radio broadcast.
