Deirdre Smeltzer
Deirdre Longacher Smeltzer, professor of mathematics and chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been teaching at EMU since 1998. Prior to 1998, she spent four years as an assistant professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Deirdre is an alumna of EMU, where she was a math major with a Bible minor. She earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Virginia. Deirdre’s research interests are in algebraic coding theory and other branches of combinatorics, although recent professional activity has focused on the co-authoring of a geometry textbook. A spring 2006 sabbatical spent teaching and writing in China was a recent professional highlight. Deirdre also enjoys reading, exercise, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
