EMU Tuition Promise Grant

The EMU Promise Grant aims to make it easier and more affordable for you to join the diverse community of learners participating in our transformational educational experience.

EMU Promise Grant Eligibility

The EMU Promise Grant covers 100 percent of all remaining tuition costs after state, federal, and institutional grants or scholarships have been awarded for residents of Virginia receiving the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant. You meet the basic criteria for eligibility if:

  • You file the FAFSA (include EMU), and we receive a FAFSA report with a valid Student Aid Index (SAI) as determined by Federal Student Aid.
  • You are a first-time, full-time (12 to 18 credit hours per semester) undergraduate student admitted to a degree-seeking program. Those pursuing second degrees are not eligible.
  • Your family’s 2022 federal income tax returns reflects an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $65,000 or less. Visit FAFSA Parent for information about how FAFSA defines family.
  • You are a resident of Virginia who is eligible for VTAG, and you complete the VTAG application prior to the July 31 deadline. 
 
EMU Promise Grant FAQs
  • How many years will the grant cover?

    The Promise Grant is renewable for four years (eight semesters) if:

    • Your family AGI is $65,000 or less as reported on a valid FAFSA.
    • You remain in good standing as a student at EMU and meet satisfactory academic progress standards.
    • You maintain Virginia residency and VTAG eligibility.
    • You maintain full-time enrollment status (12 credit hours).

    Promise Grant eligibility will be re-evaluated at the end of every semester.

  • Is summer tuition included?

    No, the Promise Grant does not cover the cost of summer tuition.

  • Do I need to be a dependent student based on FAFSA definitions to qualify?

    No, you may be a dependent or independent student as determined by FAFSA.

  • Do I need to live on campus to qualify?

    No, you do not have to live on campus to qualify for the Promise Grant if you meet the criteria to live off-campus.  

  • Does the Promise Grant cover fees or living expenses?

    No, the Promise Grant does not cover any fees or living expenses. The Promise Grant is only awarded to cover remaining tuition after federal, state, and institutional grant aid have been awarded.

  • Am I eligible if my family does not file taxes?
    Yes, it is possible to be eligible for the Promise Grant if your family does not file taxes. A valid FAFSA and SAI is required.
  • What if my family’s AGI is above $65,000?
    If your family’s AGI is above $65,000, you may be eligible for academic scholarships and VTAG—and should file the FAFSA to be considered for federal and institutional need-based aid.
