Payment and Refunds

Application Fee

A $50 non-refundable application fee is due at the time you apply and is required as part of a complete application to be considered for admission.

Please note that if you are an EMU student or EMU employee you are exempt from the $50 application fee.

Payment of course and materials fees is due in full by April 1 or within two weeks of receiving an invoice, whichever is later. The balance of your bill (lodging, transportation, etc.) is due no later than registration on the first day of your first course. Please note that unless you have made prior arrangements with the SPI Director, you will not be able to attend courses if your fees are not paid in full.

International participants applying for a US visa are not required to pay anything beyond the application fee until they receive their visa.

Payment Methods

All payment must be made in US dollars. EMU does not accept direct wire transfers for SPI fees. It also does not accept Western Union or any other moneygram service. The following is a summary of payment options:

To pay by check or money order:
Checks must be drawn from a U.S. bank. Make the check out to “EMU” and put your last name and ID number (from the top right of your invoice) in the memo line. Mail payment to the following address:

To pay by credit card or bank transfer:

Online – international participants
To pay online, international participants should go to, a third-party site that EMU uses. Peertransfer is a safer and more efficient way than wire transfer to get funds from your bank account to EMU. You will also be able to track where your payment is in the transfer process via a student dashboard and an email confirmation will be sent to you when your payment is received by the school. Please contact peerTransfer directly for help if you have any questions about making a payment. Fees may apply.

The following are notes on how to fill out the peertransfer form and make sure that we receive the money and know who it is coming from:

  • The person filling out this form is: (Choose “other”)
  • Payment Information: (Choose “other”)
  • Student Information: (Enter “application” if you are paying your $50 application fee, enter your ID number if you are paying an invoice- located at the top right of your invoice)
  • Program of study: (Choose “Other”)
  • Expected year of graduation…: (choose “Not Applicable”)

Online – domestic participants
A second option to pay online is CASHnet, another payment site that EMU uses. This option is best for domestic participants and will not be as reliable for international applicants as peertransfer. A 2.75% processing fee will apply if paying by credit card. No processing fee applies for paying by bank transfer.

To pay your $50 application fee via CASHnet, go to the CASHnet page and follow these steps:

  1. Fill in the required information
  2. Click “Add to Basket”
  3. Click “Check out”, follow the prompts, and submit

To pay all other SPI fees you will need to access CASHnet via MyEMU. To complete the process you will need your EMU username, password and ID number, which you will receive from SPI within several business days of being accepted. Follow these steps:

  1. Enter MyEMu and log on using your EMU user name and password
  2. Click on the “Accounts” tab at the top
  3. On the right side of the screen, in the upper box, click on “Go to CASHnet”
  4. Under EMU Account, click on “Make a Payment”
  5. Click on “Pay” next to your charge
  6. Follow the prompts, and submit

By phone – domestic participants
You may pay over the phone by using a credit card. To pay by phone call the EMU business office at 540-432-4672. A 3% processing fee will apply.

Refund Policy

All refunds are subject to a $100 processing fee, the cost of any visa-related postage, and a wire transfer fee(if applicable).

Any international participant who is denied a visa will receive a full refund, less the required fees.

Participants who choose to withdraw from a session less than four weeks prior to the start of the session will receive an 80 percent refund, less the required fees.

Participants who choose to withdraw from a session less than one week prior to the start of the session will receive a 50 percent refund, less the required fees.

Participants who choose to withdraw from a session less than 48 hours prior to the start of the session, do not show up for the session, or leave a session early will receive no refund.

Refunds for overpayment of fees will be made to the payer of the fees. Fees paid by a sponsoring organization will only be refunded to a participant if the organization confirms this via e-mail.

Please allow up to eight weeks for processing refund requests.
