Fifteen first-year and four returning students have been named to the honors program at EMU.
The honors program at EMU, made possible by an endowment fund, not only recognizes students with outstanding academic and leadership qualities, but also provides unique opportunities for the students to explore their gifts as they develop their abilities.
Faculty Mentors, Group Dynamics
Each honors student relates closely to a faculty mentor who provides academic and career assistance and a listening ear and identifies opportunities for the student to become involved in research, conferences and special academic projects.
The entire honors group meets regularly for discussion and support.
Of those honors students admitted this fall, two received full-tuition scholarships and 13 were awarded half-tuition scholarships, renewable for three years with satisfactory academic performance.
Competitive Edge
"EMU's honors program is highly selective with limited enrollment. Students who want to be part of the program enter into a competitive pool of applicants," said Stephanie C. Shafer, director of undergraduate admissions.
"Acceptance into the program requires at least a 3.5 GPA, 1350 SAT or 30 ACT. In addition, submission of two essays and attendance for a campus interview during honors weekend is part of the selection process," she added.
Rewards in Relationships
"Some of my closest friendships and my best professor relationship have been formed through the honor's mentor program," said Emma Stahl-Wert, a sophomore applied sociology major from Pittsburgh, Pa.
"Yet, all of these experiences for me are achieved without exclusion or elitism toward other students, which I find very impressive. Honors classes allow me to study topics outside of the typical academic curriculum," she added.
