Student-directed curriculum

Liberal Arts subjects range from art and music to psychology and education, giving students many paths to explore. Students have many paths to explore that will enhance or broaden their education.

What is it?

Breadth is key in liberal arts education. Because each student comes to EMU with different backgrounds and needs, this aspect of the curriculum is highly individualized. With their advisors, students will consider courses beyond their major. For instance, a business major should also take classes in the arts, social science, physical science and history to be a well-educated graduate. An art major may want to expand her education by taking business or sociology courses.

Choosing your courses ...

With the help of a faculty advisor, students design personalized and broad liberal arts education, selecting courses to fill the non-major semester hours that remain to complete the 128 semester hours required for graduation.

This individualized planning begins in the student's first semester with the development of a learning plan, and continues throughout the four years.

How many courses will you need?

The number of hours needed in this section is calculated by the following formula, based on 128 credit hours required for graduation:

128
- 36 Semester Hours (representing shared curriculum)
- xx Semester Hours (courses falling within the student's major)
= credits of liberal arts needed to fill the student-designed curriculum.
