Is financial assistance available?

Many students receive academic or other scholarships that are used to help pay university costs. Some students choose to borrow funds from a variety of loan programs. Some states provide tuition assistance grants to students attending private colleges and universities. Other aid in the forms of grants, scholarships, loans and employment is available to students who have demonstrated financial need.

How do you apply for financial aid?

The Financial Assistance Office mails comprehensive application packets to all students who apply for admission. The Financial Assistance Office then coordinates the overall application and awarding process and informs the student about how much aid he or she will receive.

How and when do I pay the bill?

Students are expected to make full payment (minus financial aid) for tuition, room and board when billed at the beginning of each term. A monthly installment plan is also available. Arrangements for payment are coordinated through the Student Accounts Office. All statements are sent monthly to parents of dependent students unless otherwise requested in writing. Failure to meet financial obligation is cause for denying the student the privilege of registering for or attending subsequent classes, receiving a degree or releasing a transcript of credit.

What is the finance charge?

When charges are not paid by the due date, a finance charge is added to the student’s bill equal to 1.5 percent of the unpaid balance. The charges collected at the beginning of each semester provide EMU with the money it needs for day-to-day operations. When those charges are not paid by the due date, the school must borrow money. The cost of borrowing is passed on to the students in the form of finance charges. The EMU policy is consistent with other colleges and universities. In fact, at many other schools, students who fail to pay tuition charges by the due date are simply withdrawn from their classes.
