The senior leadership of the 2009 Eastern Mennonite field hockey team was evident one more time, as three four-year members of the Lady Royals were honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Alyssa Derstine and Karissa Sauder were each named VaSID College Division Field Hockey First Team All-State, while Sarah Roth finished with Second Team All-State honors. Senior Alyssa Derstine is a two-time ODAC Player of the Year and Second Team All-American, but says her growth in the classroom will define her time at EMU.
"Natural talent can only get an individual so far. The rest comes from heart, desire and the 'want' to be better and the dedication to put in work behind the scenes, in the offseason, and before and after practice." Senior Alyssa Derstine added more metal to her shelves as she was named to the All-American Second Team.
It has been an incredible run for Eastern Mennonite University senior Alyssa Derstine and Tuesday, November 24, she pulled in another honor by being named Second Team All-American.
