Eastern Mennonite University has announced the resignation of cross country and track & field coach, Matt Dougherty, effective at the end of May. Dougherty was hired last summer as EMU's first combined head coach of the two sports, but he and his wife/assistant coach, Mary, are resigning with plans to move closer to their families. In 2009, Michael Allen was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Rookie of the Year based on his jumping ability. This year, the Eastern Mennonite sophomore has taken a bit to get going as numerous snowstorms have limited practices and even meets, but he made up for it by winning two events at the ODAC Indoor Championships Friday in Lynchburg. As the small Eastern Mennonite indoor track & field men's team slowly gets their legs under them in this snow-marred season, they get better. After a surprisingly successful season in cross country, Eastern Mennonite's Richy Bikko (Nairobi, Kenya/Harrisonburg) is getting into form in the indoor track season. He streaked his way to the national cross country meet in his first ever season and now the junior set two school records at the DuCharme Invitational to be named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week. With a second straight weekend of winter weather forecasted, Eastern Mennonite has cancelled its participation in the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport on Saturday.
