For the second straight year, Michael Allen earned a trip to the NCAA D-III National Championship. Allen was in the long jump and triple jump as a freshman and qualified again in the triple jump this season. It was down to crunch time for Richy Bikko and Michael Allen. At Wednesday's Bridgewater Last Chance Meet, the two Eastern Mennonite tracksters had a final shot at qualifying for the national track meet. The Eastern Mennonite University track & field team sent two athletes to the Gator Invitational on Friday, May 14, hosted by Allegheny College in Meadeville, Pa. Michael Allen and Richy Bikko both went to the meet hoping to qualify for the national meet. Despite solid performances in a tough field, neither came home with a qualification. When Kenny Layman set the record, junior Richy Bikko was still a full decade away from being born. Saturday Bikko broke Layman's 31-year-old school record in the 1500 meter run, topping the Eastern Mennonite Hall of Honor member's time by more than a second at 3:54.91. Layman's mark from 1979 was 3:56.24. Aside from Bikko, no runner in EMU history had come within seven seconds of the record. (May 10) [More] [Meet Results]
Eastern Mennonite University has announced the resignation of cross country and track & field coach, Matt Dougherty, effective at the end of May. Dougherty was hired last summer as EMU's first combined head coach of the two sports, but he and his wife/assistant coach, Mary, are resigning with plans to move closer to their families.
