Bach and Handel
June 14-21, 2009
In addition to presenting works by Bach, the 17th annual Bach Festival will emphasize the music of Handel, celebrating the 250th anniversary of his death.
The experience will be rich with educational opportunities as the audience learns about the musical language, oratorio characteristics, performance practice and the history of Handel’s Messiah, while also having the chance to sing the choruses within the work, along with the Festival orchestra, chorus, and soloists.
Soloists Kenneth Gayle (tenor), David Newman (baritone), and Heidi Kurtz (alto), return to the festival to perform this beloved Baroque masterpiece.
Kenneth Gayle will also perform the east-coast premiere of Fragments from Augustine the Saint by Beverly Grigsby, and Joan Griffing, concertmaster, will be featured in The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.
