After graduating from Graceland College, Sandee spent nine months living in Haarlem, The Netherlands, and traveling through Europe. She returned to the United States and began her career as an elementary school music teacher, which lasted more than 27 years.

Sandee is an elder in the Community of Christ. She has served the church in the areas of worship, pastoral care, music, and clown ministry.  She was a senior high youth leader for 18 years. She enjoys traveling and reading novels of mystery and intrigue.

During the last 10 years of teaching, Sandee developed and coordinated a comprehensive conflict resolution program in her school. In 1990 Sandee and Diane Kyser helped to create the Community Mediation Center in Davenport, Iowa. Some of the areas in which they mediated were neighborhood disputes, small claims, victim/offender, parent/child, churches, and businesses. During her 10 years with the Community Mediation Center, Sandee was the co-trainer for all of the center's training, a mediator, and case manager. They were responsible for training staff and children in conflict management skills at more than 30 schools. During the last 12 years, Sandee has received more than 275 hours of training in the area of conflict resolution and mediation.

Jean Gerber (MA '00)

Jean Gerber

9/07

I am working with healing through massage and bodywork.

After graduating from the conflict transformation program and coming from a pacifist background, I felt there was something I still needed to learn in order to do authentic work.  It involved being rooted in the body and encountering others on a terrain common to all of us.  Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine approach to trauma), visionary craniosacral work and most recently indigenous approaches to nature, ritual and community under Malidoma Some are leading me forward in a way for which I'm most grateful.

I work full-time at Massanutten resort spa in Virginia where I see a wide variety of people coming with all sorts of strengths and needs.  I also work part-time out of a private office in Harrisonburg.

Odelya Gertel (MA '06) — Fulbright Scholar

Odelya Gertel

I was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel , where I studied political science, communication and law. Then I worked for six years at the Peres Center for Peace in Tel Aviv, directing projects using sports, drama, theater, film production and culture to facilitate dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian youth.

In April, I completed the M.A. as a Fulbright Scholar in the advanced study of the arts and peacebuilding in the Conflict Transformation Program at EMU. As part of my practicum, I began to develop an arts-based program for trauma awareness and resilience. This summer I traveled to New Orleans to lead two workshops for youth victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Claudia Henning (MA '02) — Restorative Justice

Claudia coordinates a community restorative program called the Youth Justice Initiative (YJI) in West Des Moines, Iowa. The program is in its seventh year. It is housed in the police department and most referrals come from the police as a diversion from Court. Funding for the first five years of the program came from grants, but the city and schools now share most of the on-going financial cost. YJI does received additional funds from United Way and community members.

The local newspaper reported: “Instead of letting youth offenders sit in jail, Claudia Henning coordinates YJI to get kids counseling, connect them with the community and make them responsible to the people they harmed.” This year (2006) Claudia and YJI received one of three awards bestowed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The award stated: “Last year 89 youth participated in YJI. On average, 90 percent of those who start the program complete it, according to program records, and of those who have completed the program, fewer than 10 percent have repeated their crimes.”

Claudia is married, with two daughters and four grandchildren. Her younger daughter is in law school and also has an interest in restorative justice.
