Eastern Mennonite University

Do you have a story to share?

A picture, drawing, poem or other piece of art?

The gallery is an effort to give visibility to the learning, service, and relationships within the curricular and extracurricular partnerships between EMU and our local and global communities.

Ideas? Community Learning class, Y-trip, internship, volunteer opportunity...

Submissions can be turned in to the Community Learning office. The first 50 will receive a gift certificate to Kline's Dairy Bar!

The gallery will be displayed in Common Grounds from March 30 to April 12.

Take a look at last year's event winners' work. (This year there will be no judging for winners' prizes- everyone's work is important!)

Green Design and Gospels

December 13, 2007

Two new and innovative community learning courses are to be offered this 2008 spring semester: 'Green Design' with Jim Yoder and Doug Graber Neufeld, and 'Gospels' with Nancy Heisey.

Graber Neufeld writes that the Green Design course will be "learning about green design in terms of both technology and process... working with one specific project as the case study—the EMU science center project. Thus, the majority of their learning will occur outside of the traditional classroom, in large part through the context of meeting with many stakeholders of the EMU science center and experts in green design."

Gospels, a class offered every other year, will step outside the classroom to spend time with the people and activities of Our Community Place in downtown Harrisonburg. As students study the gospel texts, they will also have opportunity to be part of free public meals, help prepare the garden, join groups of prayer and Bible study, and a variety of other happenings. Through these experiences, the course asks, "What does it mean to follow Jesus in life?"

EMU students have stepped forward to pull together the first project--a shed for tools and building materials. The shed was built on campus to give visibility to the Habitat build and moved to the lot on Liberty St.
