France and Benin 2005

Journal 10

Last night, I discovered just how truly important communication is. My host parents’ 19 year old daughter came home from Ghana where she has been studying English for four years. Being able to have a real conversation with someone in my family was wonderful! I always wish I could talk to my family, because they’re such nice people, but it’s incredibly hard to communicate. Last night I got to ask all kinds of questions and they asked me everything they had been wanting to know. It was good to finally be able to connect with my family.

One of the things my host dad asked me was when would I come back to Benin. I told him that I didn’t know, and he said “if money is the issue, I’ll pay for you and your twin sister to fly over here. I’d love to meet her and see you again.” Funny thing is, he was completely serious. The hospitality in Benin is amazing. -- Karra Black
