A "Healing" Imprint

Kirk Shisler
"Back to our roots, to reconnect with the Anabaptist Christian
tradition, a faith perspective that bears witness to the healing power of Christ in community life."
Just three days before my job interview at EMU, I was in California engaged in a conversation with author Phyllis Davies about her world travels.

Phyllis was describing her experiences with people in isolated communities in the dozen or so countries she visits every year.

When I mentioned in passing that I was Mennonite, Davies said, “There are three organizations I frequently encounter in my world travels that leave a healing imprint wherever they are situated: World Neighbors, American Friends Service Committee, and Mennonite Central Committee.”

“Well, there you are,” I murmured to myself. On the verge of re-entry into Mennonite community, after a 21- year sojourn in Syracuse, N.Y., with ProLiteracy Worldwide, Davies’ reference to MCC confirmed the direction my wife, Mary Ann, and I were already headed.

Back to our roots, to reconnect with the Anabaptist Christian tradition, a faith perspective that bears witness to the healing power of Christ in community life and through Mennonite organizations like MCC and EMU.

Now, after one month on the job, I can’t seem to get the healing imprint notion out of my mind. At every turn, there is concrete evidence that EMU’s programs are effectively preparing students to be healers in this troubled world.

As an alumnus, donor, parent, grandparent, and/or friend of EMU, your investment of prayers and funds connects you as a valued partner in this life-transforming enterprise! We are extremely grateful for your contributions.
