Patchwork of Peace

Commissioned by the class of 2006 as a gift to CJP, the "Patchwork of Peace" stained glass artwork (by local artist, Mert Brubaker) that hangs near the door of the CJP office combines motifs from around the world in a crazy-patch quilt design, reminiscent of quilts traditionally sown by Mennonite women.

A peace dove is the focal point of this artwork, amid patches inspired by the world. A vibrantly blue patch features a network motif traceable through many centuries of Middle Eastern art. The paisley design evokes India. The bright, multi-striped patch has a Latin American flavor. A spiral sun on botanical-colored glass represents indigenous peoples.

The style of Frank Lloyd Wright, a 20th century American architect, is detectable as a United States contribution. There is African mud cloth, European ‘crystal,’ and tropical blue-green water and forest. Delicate pastel confetti glass alludes to fine Asian art. The open hand is the universal symbol of friendship and hospitality.

Each patch in the piece is unique, but when joined, the patches form an intricate and even more beautiful whole. The top remains open, suggesting that the quilt piece and the work of peacebuilding are not yet complete.
