Greenhouse

January 18, 2006

One of my favorite places on campus is the greenhouse off of the Suter Science Center.

Okay, I am sure that more than half of the people who read that first sentence have rolled their eyes and dismissed me as a nerd. Those people may be right, but I will leave it up to individual decision. Despite any stigma I think everyone can enjoy the greenhouse.

More so than with animals, casual observers tend to lump all plants into very broad categories; namely grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers. However, the greenhouse hosts such a variety that one can hardly call two plants “shrubs” when one’s fleshy round leaves are interrupted by tiny pastel pink flowers in December and the other’s saw-like leaves by tongues of yellow in March. Needless to say, I must recommend the greenhouse.

Other bonus of the greenhouse is that it is (mostly) dry in the rain and comfortably warm even when snow is on the ground. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will be quiet.
