An interview on 'learning'

October 17, 2005

The admissions office recently asked me a few questions about my views on learning and, more specifically, how the honors program here at EMU has helped to shape the way I think. I thought it might be helpful to post some of my thoughts here.

What is your philosophy on learning?
(How do you see learning as a part of your life?)
I see learning as a personal endeavor that can be encouraged and aided by teachers in an institution, but the ultimate responsibility falls on myself. I can complete assignments and learn very little, and I can receive a poor grade and learn a lot. I would like to think that learning is very important to me, and I believe that the choices I make reflect that the majority of the time.

How has the honors program pushed you to your fullest potential?
In my very limited experience with the honors program, I have been given more questions than answers. Speakers from accross the curriculum have given samples of their disciplines in the form of "ruling ideas" or "worldviews" present in their work. The ideas and residual thoughts create questions in my own head that encourage me to inquire further. Further inquiry may be to take an introductory class in a new discipline, read a book that the speaker mentioned, or just talk to persons from that area of interest. The honors programs connects its students to professors, one another, and other resources to continue their own learning.

What is your favorite part of the program?
As a first-year student with an undeclared major, my favorite part of the honors program to this point has been the Ruling Ideas Seminar. Each Tuesday and Thursday at 8 am I get a capsule of ideas that, many times, are new to me. I get to experiece different professors and different ways of approaching the same problems. This exposure keeps me open to possibilities for classes and things to think about as I explore my interests and major.

What is one thing you've learned?
One of many things that I have learned, or am beginning to learn, from the honors program is how personal relationship and knowledge outside of one's own experience can develop an appreciation for self and an empathy and compassion for others.

be you
