Katie's profile

Hometown: Archbold, Ohio
Major: Spanish Education
In my downtime: Run, play soccer, play my guitar, spend LOTS of time with my friends.
Why I came to EMU: The atmosphere on campus is great and EMU offers all of the programs that
I am interested in. I also wanted to go somewhere where I could meet a
lot of new people, so I wanted to move away from my hometown area.
Harrisonburg is a very neat little city, and the Shenandoah Valley is
beautiful!
My favorite EMU activity so far: Making up treasure hunts for my neighbors and stargazing from the top of
the EMU hill.
What first made me aware of EMU? I am a Mennonite, which means that since I started kindergarten, I have
received mailings and phone calls from EMU administration and
professors-just kidding! When I began high school, I started receiving
information through my church and EMU began contacting me, but I DID get
mailings and phone calls at that point.
What was the clincher in coming to EMU? Well, for one thing, the school colors and mascots are a lot better than
the other Mennonite schools-the purple maple leaf, the purple beaver, and
the maroon lark. The Royal, even if it is a blue lion, really blows away
all of the other competition. In reality, I liked that EMU is a trip out
of the midwest, because I have lived in Ohio for my whole life. The city
of Harrisonburg is great and the mountains are beautiful!
How has EMU challenged me academically? The professors here have challenged me from day one to look at things
beyond face value. In our classes, most of what we read is applied to our
lives and faith. They also present different views on the same issue,
which stretches me to re-think and stand up for what I believe.
What inspires me in my studies ... what keeps me going? My parents are helping me pay for college and I have also received a lot
of scholarships from outside organizations and EMU. I realize that a lot
of people have invested in my education, and they are expecting me to take
advantage of this. I consider myself very fortunate to have help as I
complete college, and I know that this is not something everyone can say.
Is there one activity or event I could not live without here at EMU? Though EMU has had many planned activities and events, I have to say that
some of my favorite times have been when a group of us get together and
just get to know each other better. There is lots of "free time" in
college, time that is really designed for studying, reading, athletics, or
the other extracurriculars. I have really enjoyed choosing how to spend
that time-a lot of studying, but also some time with friends and fun
things.
How does the value of an EMU education correlate with the cost? So far, I have found the cost to be well worth the experience. I must
admit that I was a little overwhelmed when I received the first tuition
bill and realized how much this would cost, but I really love the people
here and the campus. I have so many opportunities provided for me. I
hope that in ten years when I look back on my college experience, I can
say that it took me to places that I never could have gone to without this
experience.
