a week described through food

February 11, 2006

I realized today that I've only eaten dinner in the cafeteria twice in the past nine days. That's pretty exciting. There's been a lot of fun things happening lately, and fun events usually include food...

Last Friday night was the honors banquet for the prospective honors students, and it was catered by Taste of Thai, perhaps the best restaurant around. Saturday night I ate in the caf, but Sunday was the Super Bowl and CAC sponsored a party with free pizza in the Common Grounds.

On Monday, I ate at the Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant located within walking distance of campus. Our entire Franconia church conference rented out the place, and probably around 30 or so people showed up. My brother, Dave, is currently working for the Franconia Conference, and he along with Marlene Frankenfield and Steve Kriss invited us for an evening of fellowship and discussion. The food was great, and we spent time talking about what we want from the church, why we care about it, and ways to stay connected with the church.

My father, Steve Landis, was here at EMU all week as pastor-in-residence. It was good to have him around and spend time with him throughout the week. On Tuesday night he took all the EMU students from our congregation out to eat at Country Cookin' in the Valley Mall. Let me say, buffets can be very dangerous....
For dinner on Wednesday I ate with my Dad in the cafeteria, which was actually a decent meal of steak and shrimp. Thursday night I ate leftovers I still had from Taste of Thai. (After the banquet on Friday, everyone rushed to the buffet tables with tupperware containers and began hurriedly dishing out the leftover Thai food, unwilling to let any of it go to waste!) Last night I went to the Blue Nile again with Laura, Becca, Lindsay, and Lindsay's sister Rachel, who is visiting from Iowa.

Today I woke up to the pleasant surprise of snow. It has been coming down constantly all day, and will probably continue through the night. A large group of us went out to lunch downtown at Dave's Taverna for Greek food, including Erica's boyfriend Matt who is visiting from Hesston. Afterwards we walked around the court sqaure, took some photos in the snow, and threw a few snowballs! I spent the afternoon at my sister's house. I helped her design an invitation for her wedding in July, and then we made quesadillas for dinner.
So overall, I've managed to avoid the cafeteria quite a bit in the last week. I don't think i'll be quite so lucky this week, but oh well. :)
