A multi-use building to serve a growing student body and the local community. That's the University Commons at EMU.
The $22 million project includes:
- academic facilities to enrich the mind,
- physical activity space to strengthen the body
- and community gathering places to nurture the soul.
The Commons was designed by The Troyer Group, an architectural firm based in Mishawaka, Ind.. Other EMU facilities designed by Troyer include the seminary building (completed in 1993) and the Campus Center (finished in 1986).
Phase 1, completed in August 2000, houses three athletic courts, the campus bookstore, the snack shop and an indoor plaza. There are offices for career services, campus ministries, counseling, health services, multicultural programs, residence life & housing, student programs, athletics and physical education.
Phase 2 will consist of a total renovation of the current student center into drama facilities. The project will strengthen EMU's academic program in theater, one of the university's newest majors. The Commons will provide a centralized location for drama classrooms and offices, as well as EMU's first facility designed specifically for stage productions.
