Self and Teacher Evaluation

In addition to the self- and teacher-assessment that this curriculum has suggested in chapters 1 and 2, here we emphasize the practical assessment surrounding HIV/AIDS awareness. Teachers are encouraged to discuss with their classes, and students are invited to discuss among themselves, their level of awareness and preparedness regarding HIV/AIDS.

As a review, like many illnesses there are many myths around HIV/AIDS. One of the reasons why there are so many myths around HIV/AIDS is because many adults are scared to talk about things that they know very little about. Being scared of something does not make it go away. It is very important to know the facts about HIV/AIDS, to reduce your own risk of infection, and to help understand the impact the illness has on those who are infected.

It is also important to stop and think about the effect myths have on people living with HIV/AIDS. Myths can lead to discrimination and prejudice, hurting people who need support and understanding. You cannot contract HIV/AIDS through touching someone who is infected. HIV has not shown to be passed on to others through sharing food, minor accidents or fighting. You cannot catch HIV/AIDS in a swimming pool. HIV/AIDS is not something that affects only gay people. Everybody is at risk of HIV/AIDS if they have unprotected sex or share needles. -
