Signs of Hope in 2008

CJP Director Lynn Roth
For me and my family, 2007 was a year of transition. In August, I became the new executive director of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP). It meant moving to a new town, accepting the challenge of new responsibilities, and pursuing new possibilities for a better world.
For many around the world who suffer from the results of war and other disasters, however, 2007 holds more difficult memories and little hope. My heart grieves for these people.
I feel blessed to be able to serve in this new position with CJP. In arriving, it has been exciting to see so many signs of hope… A gifted and committed faculty and staff who are leaders in the peacebuilding field. Talented students who are ready to learn and interact around difficult issues. A network of more than 250 masters degree graduates, 2,000 Summer Peacebuilding Institute participants, and 1,000 alumni of Seminars on Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR).
These 3,000 or so people are a powerful voice for peace in this world. In addition, the opportunity to be nested at Eastern Mennonite University and supported by this community gives me and others working and studying here encouragement for a hopeful future.
As you read this issue of Peacebuilder, I ask that you reflect on the seeds of peace that are being sown daily in so many places around the world in the face of tremendous obstacles. I invite you to consider supporting our faculty, staff, students and alumni through prayer, financial support and encouraging others to participate in the educational programs that are offered at CJP.
I have seen a lot of hope in the people of CJP. I trust you too will see the signs of hope as you read their stories. Please join us in whatever way you can to make a difference in 2008.
