Apology for Visiting Artist Exhibit in Hartzler Library

Response from Artist
Angst Over Art Is My Fault
Printed in "Letters to the Editor" section of Harrisonburg's Daily News-Record on Thurs. April 17
As the artist of the "Royal Flush," it grieves me deeply that the display of my artwork in the Hartzler Gallery may have damaged the reputation of Eastern Mennonite University.
By giving me the opportunity to present an exhibition, the university had confidence in my sensibility to select the appropriate pieces for the show. I failed to do this and apologize for my error.
I suggest that any angst about this unfortunate incident be directed toward the artist and not Eastern Mennonite University or the Mennonite Church.

Several letters to the Daily News-Record in recent weeks have expressed concern about a display by visiting artist Herb Weaver in EMU’s Sadie A. Hartzler Library Art Gallery March 10 through April 4.
I regret the art piece in question appeared in this exhibit and for that I apologize.
As a liberal arts institution, EMU will always give space for conversations about difficult topics in our culture. It should be clear, however, that no visiting artist (or guest speaker) should ever be seen as “speaking for the institution” or the Mennonite Church.
I have attempted to respond personally to each individual who has contacted the university with concerns, offering the opportunity for further conversation.
We have also contacted visiting artist Herb Weaver who welcomes input from anyone directly. (See Herb's response, also printed the Daily News-Record, to the right.) His email address is hweaver@bethanywv.edu.
EMU is committed to fostering critical thinking and open debate. We regret that these have been hindered through this incident.
