Creation Care: What do I do next?Read Bible with creation care in mind. How does God care for the rest of creation? In many ways. Start now but start small, because you can't do everything right away.
*Donate rather than discard usable clothing and furniture. During Move-out Days at the end of the semester, look for bins to donate your clothing to Gift and Thrift or other local charities. *When printing papers, use the DOUBLE-SIDED option. Most instructors support students who print their work double-sided or on scratch (re-used) paper. Ask your professors what they expect. *Turn off computer and other appliances when not in use. Use energy saver feature of computer for automatic shutdown. *When making copies, choose to make double sided copies by selecting the "DOUBLED-SIDED" option. And use recycled paper in your copiers! *Take smaller portions in cafeteria and other eating places to eliminate waste. *Avoid the use of disposable items like razors, lighters, flashlights, cameras and batteries. *Read the newspaper online! Many newspapers are now available on the web. Check out an online list or read these local and regional newspapers to start with: *Reduce junk mail! The EPA reports that 2.1 percent of municipal solid waste in landfills is direct mail and catalogs. To opt out nationally, contact the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service (MPS). *Turn off water while brushing teeth, lathering, etc., to reduce water waste.
*Plant a rain garden and set up rain harvesting system to cleanse roof runoff and recharge local water table. *Compost kitchen trimmings at home with torn/shredded newspaper or office paper. *Avoid foods shipped long distances. Instead, start your own garden or buy fruit and vegetables locally. *Avoid use of Styrofoam in packaging and dishware. Carry a reusable mug, rather than getting a throw-away at events and carryout stores. |
