Museum of Natural HistoryEducators may choose one of the following new hands-on workshops when scheduling their visit. Special effort is made to adapt the entire museum program to the specific grade level of students and to reinforce VA Standards of Learning and WV Learning Outcomes.

Grades K-2

Exploring the world around you
Students explore the Discovery Room by visiting stations focusing on animals and plant adaptations, bones and shells, life cycles, ocean creatures, fossils, and rocks and minerals.

Amazing adaptations
Students learn how animals adapt to different habitats and environments including feeding specializations and predator/prey concepts.

Grades 3-5:

Getting to know rocks and fossils
Students identify rock and mineral types and learn about local geology, fossil formation and the rock cycle.

Amazing adaptations
Similar to the K-2 animal workshop above but with more detailed discussion and activities.

Discovering owls
Students learn about food chains and energy flow, vertebrate anatomy, and predator/prey relationships by dissecting owl pellets. Mounted owls and small mammal skeletons and skins provide useful visual aids. Additional fee may apply.
