Shamar

In Hebrew, the word “shamar” means to keep, protect, preserve, watch and guard.

God’s followers were called in the Old Testament to practice “shamar” for the land. It was God’s desire that His chosen people care for, preserve and protect the created earth.

EMU has had a historic commitment to living in harmony with the earth to some degree, even before “sustainability” became a buzz word. EMU, for example, was a pioneer in wise energy use before sustainability issues were recognized by the broader culture.

Today, as followers of Jesus and his message of reconciliation – among people, between people and God, and between people and creation – EMU is making renewed efforts and commitment to be “keepers” or stewards of God’s creation.

This “keeping” or reconciling of creation with humans and God happens through inter-disciplinary study, research, practice and collaboration among the various disciplines. EMU prepares graduates in their chosen professions to be catalysts for humankinds’ reconciliation with God’s created world.
