Eastern Mennonite Seminary will hold its 60th annual commencement service 3 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 25 in Lehman Auditorium on the EMU campus.
Willard M. Swartley, professor emeritus of New Testament at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind., will give the commencement address. Dr. Swartley, a 1959 EMU graduate, was named "alumnus of the year" in 2004. He was a member of the Bible and religion faculty at EMU, 1965-68 and 1971-78.
Swartley will speak on the theme, "'Abide in me' and Bear Fruit," based on John 15:1-5, 8-11, 16-17 and Galatians 5:22-23.
Loren Swartendruber, president of EMU will preside and confer degrees or certificates on the 21 members of the seminary class of 2009. The seminary will award 14 master of divinity degrees, one master of arts in religion degree and four master of arts in church leadership degrees. Two persons will receive the one-year certificate in ministry studies.
A baccalaureate service planned by the senior class will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, Apr. 24, in Martin Chapel in the seminary building at EMU. Students Peggy Packard, Rene Hostetter and Rodney Nice will speak. A reception for seminary graduates, their relatives and friends will immediately follow the baccalaureate in the seminary fellowship area.
The baccalaureate and commencement services are open to the public.
