Calling

Christ's call to discipleship began for me a closer look at ministry vocation, a dichotomy that has since been merged into one. Early missionary stories stimulated my imagination and an interest in the biblical text prompted further exploration in what evolved into a clear sense of calling. Pastoral ministry grew out of various opportunities to practice and experiment with spiritual gifts. After a decade of ministry, I found myself needing further preparation in several areas that relate to the complexity of human reality. EMS provided that space for which I am truly grateful and better equipped.

Ideal Ministry

I want to be a participant of an authentic body of Christ through which God can work his wonders in the wider world: an intimate, local fellowship that is comfortable meeting in a house where people have dinner, worship, pray, tell stories, encourage each other, discuss mission in the wider world, and go out to spread the love Christ to those without.

EMS Comments

My experience at EMS was intertwined with several difficulties and life struggles that made the learning more worthwhile. EMS (faculty and students) provided support and resources which acted much like a community while clearly being a place for ministry preparation. I was often challenged by the course work and ministry experience.

Favorite Course

This is a difficult question, since several courses come to mind. However, one of the significant learning shifts for me took place while taking Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). The level of intentional reflection this course invites established a pattern of reflection that continues for me today. This growing practice provides insight and learning in relationships and ministry.

Thoughts for Someone in My Position

Consider seminary as a space and season in your life to work on some significant life projects that will enhance your person, ministry and service to others. With its strong formational path, seasoned faculty, and hospitable community, one has an opportunity to "construct something upon which to rejoice."
