Student programs and orientation
Student
programs and orientation handles a multitude of programs
aimed at enhancing the quality of life for all students.
Involvement is the key. Our services include:
- Orientation, when new students are greeted by an SOSer (Student Orientation Staff)
- campus-wide parties
- leadership training
- film and mainstage concerts (view schedule)
- and recreational sports teams.
The director is assisted by part-time staff who direct the recreational sports and leadership training programs. Students employed under the work study program staff the Commons game room and serve as the executive committee for the Campus Activities Council (CAC), a body of students interested in and dedicated to providing activities throughout the academic year which are fun, exciting, and provide campus-wide fellowship. Typical CAC activities include talent shows, all-school picnics, holiday and seasonal events, rollerskating, bowling, films and contemporary Christian concerts. A large number of volunteers provide the backbone of the council, located in the Student Life Suite on the second floor of the University Commons.
Orientation
A key opportunity
for enhancing the EMU experience is participation in the orientation
program. The program is designed to help new students (first year
and transfer) make connections and adjust to campus. Crucial campus
information is shared and social involvement is promoted by the
formation of small groups led by returning students and a faculty/staff
member.
These groups provide an excellent opportunity to make on-campus
contacts and gain an informed perspective on the campus system.
New students receive information about orientation in August (December
for spring semester entrants.)
Recreational
sports
Rec sports provides a program of recreational activity where people of
all skill levels may participate. There is exciting competition,
however, the main objective is to get as many people involved
as possible.
Some events are offered with a season lasting four to five weeks with a tounament at the conclusion. Other sports are offered on a more limited basis.
League play is now offered in floor hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, and volleyball. Sports with a more limited schedule include: sand volley ball, softball, golf, tennis, running, draft volleyball, billards, table tennis, wall climbing, and three on three basketball.
All students, faculty and staff and spouses are welcome to participate in the various recreational sports events.
